Um sein wasserdurchlässiges Gefieder zu trocknen, stellt sich der Schlangenhalsvogel mit ausgebreiteten Flügeln in die Sonne. Beim Schwimmen ragen nur Kopf und Hals über die Wasseroberfläche. Erbeutete Fische werden in die Luft geworfen und so wieder aufgefangen, daß sie mit dem Kopf voran verschluckt werden können. Diese Fertigkeit wird mit Zweigen geübt.
