In eigener Sache: Der Newsletter der Deutschen Digitalen Bibliothek

In our own interest: The newsletter of the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek

04.07.2016

We are pleased to present the first edition of our newsletter!

The newsletter will appear eight to ten times per year and will report on all topics relating to the establishment and expansion of the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek.

We will continually present our data partners – museums, libraries, archives, media libraries, institutions for the preservation of historical monuments and scientific institutions – likewise their digital holdings. Furthermore, collection highlights, the topic of the month or our virtual exhibitions will show the diversity of the holdings which can be searched in the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek and which tell exciting or surprising stories with their objects. By means of background articles we will draw attention to important aspects from the areas of culture and digitisation of particular concern to us in the further development of the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek. These include, for example, technical and legal fields of activity, such as questions on the standardisation of metadata or on aspects of copyright law.

The “anteprima” (preview) will give information about future dates and events; trade-fair appearances, our cultural data hackathon “Coding da Vinci” or open workshops and conferences of the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek and its cooperation partners.

The first edition - July 2016

We are devoting the highlight of our first edition to the current virtual exhibition on the Dresden Maya Codex of the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek, which has emerged from the cooperation with the Sächsische Landesbibliothek – Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Dresden (Saxon State and University Library Dresden). We present the Deutsche Historische Museum (German Historical Museum) as one of our new data partners and have taken the highly-regarded exhibition “Bart – Zwischen Natur und Rasur” (Beards – Between Nature and Razor) of the Neues Musuem Berlin“ (New Museum Berlin) as an opportunity to reflect on beards as a cultural-historical phenomenon and present certain objects on this from the DDB.

Our background article talks about digital utilisation possibilities under current copyright law – this has been taken from the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek’s first publication “Der Vergangenheit eine Zukunft Kulturelles Erbe in der digitalen Welt” (A Future for the Past – Cultural Heritage in a Digital World), which we publish successively on our portal.

And finally, but actually first and foremost, our newsletter should entertain you. We hope you enjoy reading it!
