Uwok, a leading man in Malingdam, cultivates his taro garden at an altitude of 2100 metres: He uproots the weeds, heaps them up around the taro plants (Colocasia esculenta) as green manure, takes up sods of grass with the digging stick, and places them upside-down about the plants. Uwok harvests taro and plants the sprout again. He roasts small taro tubers in the fire for a spontaneous meal.
