Baga (Westafrika, Guineaküste) - Schnitzen einer Tanzmaske (Nimba)

Ein ausgesuchter Baum wird gefällt, ein Stück Rohmaterial abgelängt und abgetrennt. Für die Maskenfigur wird Maß genommen und danach die Maske aus dem vollen Werkstück herausgeschnitzt. Nach dem Anbringen aller Ornamente werden die Augen vorgezeichnet und ausgehoben. Anschließend wird das Kopfloch für den Maskenträger ausgehöhlt, die Maske durch Brennen geschwärzt und mit Palmöl eingerieben.
A tree is selected and felled, a length of timber is cut off and the measure of the mask figure is taken. Then the mask is carved. After the mask has been ornamented, the opening for the wearer of the mask is hollowed out. Finally, the mask is blackened over the fire and rubbed with palm-oil.
