Masakin (Ostafrika, Kordofan) - Hirsedrusch

Zwei Tage vor dem Dreschen wird der Dreschplatz mit einer Masse aus Kuhmist und Wasser gestrichen. Die in die Mitte des Platzes geschütteten Durrarispen werden von 15 Männern mit Dreschhölzern in mehreren Dreschgängen entkörnt, und die Körner werden zu einem Haufen zusammengeschaufelt. Anschließend reinigen Frauen die Körner durch mehrfaches Worfeln. Das gereinigte Korn wird wieder aufgehäuft und mit Symbolen wie Dreschholz, Holzgabel sowie einem grünen und einem trockenen Zweig bestückt, die den Wunsch nach einer guten Ernte ausdrücken.
The surface of the threshing ground is covered with a layer of cow dung mixed with water and left to dry. Panicles of millet are then threshed on the place by a group of men, who from time to time interrupt their work and drink merisa (millet beer). After repeated threshing the millet is repeatedly winnowed by the women and formed into a heap. Flail, wooden fork and branches placed in the centre of the millet heap symbolize the wish for a good next harvest.
