Architektur

Die romanische Gründung wurde in der gotischen Zeit des 14 Jh durch einen Neubau ersetzt, von welchem der massive Kirchturm überdauert hat. Das Langhaus wurde im Jahr 1737 durch einen barocken Neubau ersetzt. Einhergehend mit der Aufgabe des Kirchhofes als Begräbnisplatz wurde der Wehrgang der Kirchhofmauer sowie diese teilweise selbst abgetragen. Merkershausen, unter der Herrschaft der Reichsabtei Fulda, stellte einen Brückenkopf gegen das Fürstbistum Würzburg dar. Founded in the Romanesque time of the 11-12th century, the church was totally rebuild in the 14th century in Gothic style. The massive church tower of the “choir type” has survived, with a new bell house in the late Gothic, respectively. In the year 1737, the nave was rebuild and in accordance the cemetery lost its primary function. Thereby, the battlement of the curtain was removed from the cemetery battlement, although parts of the curtain itself. Merkershausen and its Church-Castle (supposed to be a Gaden Church-Castle too) was in possession the imperial Abbey of Fulda, and therefore a warhead against the Prince Bishopric of Würzburg.
