The Power of Virtual Maps
Der Essay gibt einen Überblick über die Entwicklung von Karten und ihren gesellschaftlichen Funktionen. Er zieht eine Verbindung von ersten Entwicklungen bis zu heutigen Apps. Am Beispiel des Erfolges von Pokémon Go wird verdeutlicht, wie digitale Karten unsere heutige Alltagspraxis durchziehen, und kritisch die damit verbundenen gesellschaftlichen Auswirkungen reflektiert.
The paper discusses the development of maps and their function within society. It links the genesis of early maps with the current development of urban apps and the success of Pokémon Go. Thus it questions the practice of mapping and gives an overview over the critical perspectives of today's mapping.
