Kirche mit Ort im frühen 9. Jh durch Kaiser Karl dem Großen als eine der zwölf „Slavenkichen“ gegründet. Durch die Herzöge von Andechs-Meranien im 13 Jh zum Markt ausgebaut; Stadtecht im 14 Jh. Nach Aussterben der Herzöge 1248 am das Fürstbistum Bamberg bis zur Säkularisation 1803. Stadtbild mit Stadtkirche sowie adeligen Wohnhäusern im Baubestand der Renaissance. Teile der Stadtbefestigung mit Toren und Wehrtürmen sowie des Kastenhofes erhalten. Founded in the early 9th century by Emporer Charlemagne as one of the twelve „Salve-Churches“, the village grew under the possession of the Dukes of Andechs-Meranien to a Market during the 13th century and got town rights in the 14th century. After the dukes died out in 1248, the possession came to the Prince Bishopric of Bamberg, where it stayed until secularization took place in 1803. The town with the town church shows a lovely picture with some noble houses dating back into Renaissance time. Parts of the town wall with gates and towers are present, although the so called “Kastenhof”, administration of the Prince Bishopric of Bamberg.
