Wenn Hacker Kulturdaten zum Tanzen bringen - Coding da Vinci Berlin

When Hackers Make Cultural Data Dance - Coding da Vinci Berlin

12.10.2017

Joint press release by the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek (German Digital Library), the Open Knowledge Foundation Germany e.V., the Servicestelle Digitalisierung Berlin and Wikimedia Deutschland e.V.

Berlin, the 12th October 2017

Coding da Vinci starts on 21 October. Coding da Vinci is the cultural hackathon in Germany:  Freely re-usable applications arise from freely licenced and digitalised cultural assets. For Coding da Vinci links technologically-minded and culture-loving communities with cultural institutions in order to show and develop the creative potential that is inherent in our digital cultural heritage.

In the last three years, many data have already been made available under an open licence and transformed into surprising, exciting and impressive projects and innovations within the framework of Coding da Vinci. In 2017, Coding da Vinci focuses on the cultural assets of the region of Berlin-Brandenburg.

19 cultural institutions, ranging from the Wegemuseum in Wusterhausen-Dosse to the Berliner Staatsbibliothek, the Museum für Naturkunde and the Deutsches Technikmuseum, provide 30 data sets. The funding programme „Digitalisierung des Landes Berlin“ („Digitalisation of the federal state of Berlin“) has supported 9 institutions in providing the data. About 120 coders and designers will face the price competition and develop new applications such as the funny Zeitblick-Selfie-App within a period of six weeks.

The kick-off will take place at the Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft in Schönweide on the weekend of 21 & 22 October. The award ceremony will take place at the Jüdisches Museum on 2 December.

Coding da Vinci - The Kultur-Hackathon is a joint project of the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek (DDB), the Open Knowledge Foundation Germany e.V. (OKF DE), the Servicestelle Digitalisierung Berlin (digiS) and Wikimedia Deutschland e.V. (WMDE) and an official contribution to the European Cultural Heritage Year 2018 in Germany (SHARING HERITAGE).
