Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek: „Meine DDB“ im aktuellen Release

Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek: the latest release with new feature “My DDB”

03.09.2013

A new release of the back and front end of the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek (DDB) was launched on 27 August, featuring a range of functions that were implemented in the second milestone of this year’s project.

To improve the DDB as a research tool for its users, we have introduced “My DBB”, a personalised section of the website. At the current stage of development, users can use this feature to save individual items from search results and the details view of the DDB website. These can then be accessed as a list under “My DDB>Favorites”, where they can also be managed and forwarded per email.

Users can set up a “My DDB” account by registering their name and email address on the DDB website (www.deutsche-digitale-bibliothek.de/user/registration). Alternatively, you can use 1-click-authentication if you already have a Google or Yahoo account (www.deutsche-digitale-bibliothek.de/login). This service is based on the secure and widely used OpenID protocol.

The main priority for the latest milestone was to complete the conversion of the internal data model to the Europeana Data Model (EDM). This has laid the foundations for further important developments of the DDB, such as the regular export of data to Europeana which will be implemented in the near future.

Converting to EDM makes it necessary to reload all of the current data, which will begin this week. Some of the new functions are only compatible with the new format and will therefore be gradually released on the DDB portal when a critical mass of data has been loaded in the required format.

This includes the designation of machine-readable rights statements for each digital item, an important step towards creating a platform that provides access to Web 2.0 and Semantic Web functionality. The rights statements are based on a selection of different licences, which are explained in the DDB licence model. Under the label “Legal status” on the website, you will be able to find links to pages with information on each licence (e.g. www.deutsche-digitale-bibliothek.de/content/lizenzen/rv-fz/).

In addition to fixing bugs typical of a beta phase and optimising the website, especially the look and user-friendliness of the DDB portal on mobile devices, improvements have also been made to the search and display of hierarchical data.
