Save the Date: OPEN! – Conference for digital innovation

30.11.2016

For the second time OPEN! – Conference for digital innovation – is taking place on the 7th of December 2016 in Stuttgart. The launch of the conference last year focused on the areas open source, open files, open educational resources and open business models, to show how success factors and innovative approaches of open-movements may be applied to enterprises and organizations. The basic idea of the conference is to note challenges and to offer solutions to the question of how productivity and innovation may be enhanced in a data-driven world on the principles of open culture.

The conference is being organized by the MFG innovation agency Medien- und Kreativwirtschaft with help from the Open Source Business Alliance and the Ministry for Business, Research and Art in Baden-Württemberg. The Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek is taking part as a partner for the first time.

This year’s OPEN! is focussing on the question of disruption: How relevant are open systems today, tomorrow and in future?

Altogether four panels - industry, science and research, culture and creative business, and public administration – will be going into questions about digitalization as the nucleus of disruptive business models, as an opportunity and risk for the daily efforts of teachers at all educational institutions, as a way for cultural institutions to reach new target groups through the open and free download of cultural data, and finally into the question of digitalization in the area of politics: open government partnership, data communities and digital engagement.

The panel on culture and creative business

The panel on culture and creative business, moderated by Stephan Bartholmei, responsible for product development and innovation at the Deutsche Digitale  Bibliothek, will be exploring the possibilities and challenges of open cultural data. In two sessions it should be shown with the help of best practices how cultural institutions are already meeting these challenges, and how, in particular cases, these solutions may be applied sustainably in the field of culture.

Session 1 will be mainly about: ‘Where may an open knowledge-transfer in the field of culture lead?’ Antje Schmidt from the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe, Carmen Simon and Daniele Turini from the Historical Museum in Basel, Timo Strohmaier from Chestnut One, and Caroline Gritschke from the House of History BW will be presenting their projects and notions.

Session 2 will be mainly about: ‘How can knowledge be transferred openly in the field of culture?’ There will be a presentation of e-learning concepts (Nele Hirsch, eBildungslabor) and online courses about art history (Inka Drögemüller from the Städel Museum in Frankfurt) and the session will be rounded off with a panel discussion: ‘Where may an openness of digitalized cultural assets lead?’
