A Touch of Star Trek, Part II: Artificial Intelligences in Dialogue

We contacted DALL-E. DALL-E comes from the same manufacturer as ChatGPT and creates images based on text descriptions that you enter into a command line. The descriptions are limited to 400 characters. For each input, the AI creates a set of four square images, but it is also capable of rejecting requests it deems inappropriate. This is something it has in common with ChatGPT - and it's a problem. Imagine a market-dominating search engine AI in the near future that decides which requests are appropriate and which are not. We experimented a bit with DALL-E and let it interact with ChatGPT. The results are, well, mostly harmless.

Unlike ChatGPT, DALL-E can only understand English. We start slowly:

A rather boring result, partly with incomprehensible gibberish. Or maybe we're just not capable of understanding what "Lenllie Dengernder" has to do with the German Digital Library? In any case, in a Douglas Adams novel, that could be the name of the librarian. We decide to enter the following definition of the German Digital Library, created by ChatGPT, into DALL-E's command line (translated from German to English by Google, and slightly shortened by us).

A no less dreary result than our first attempt, which consisted of only three words. But this time with more gibberish. How disappointing. At the same time, we realize that we have ChatGPT, an AI that can speak English - so we don't need Google anymore!

Wow. Dieser Text haut uns ziemlich um. Er scheint kreativ, erinnert uns an die genannten Autoren, wir bekommen ein Gefühl für den beschriebenen Ort. Natürlich ist er wieder viel zu lang für DALL-E. Uns kommt (endlich) die Idee, die KI ihren eigenen Text redigieren zu lassen.

Allein das macht schon einen großen Teil der Faszination aus. Erreicht wird dadurch in jedem Fall eine sehr persönliche Bindung der Kunden („User“) an ein Produkt („Suchmaschine“, im weiteren Sinne). Eine solche KI macht Spaß und liefert teils akkurate, teils verblüffende, in jedem Fall schwer nachprüfbare, intransparente und damit leicht manipulierbare Ergebnisse.
