Den für Primaten extremen klimatischen Verhältnissen der heimischen Verbreitungsgebiete des Berberaffen, denen das Bodenseeklima annähernd gleicht, entsprechen einerseits morphologische Adaptationen wie Winterfell und Schwanzlosigkeit, andererseits Anpassungen des Verhaltens der Tiere wie: saisonale Paarungszeiten und komplexe Strategien der Maximierung des Fortpflanzungserfolgs; eine, mit anderen Makaken verglichen, bemerkenswerte Toleranz der erwachsenen Männchen untereinander; eine zentrale Rolle der Säuglinge in der Strukturierung der Sozietät, ihre Betreuung auch durch die Männchen und schließlich die Funktion von Säuglingen als 'sozialen Vermittlern' - besonders auffällig im artspezifischen Begegnungsritual der sogenannten Triaden. Winter fur and lack of tail are only two adaptions of the Barbary ape to extreme climatic variations. Other adaptions are behavioural and include seasonal mating, complex strategies for reproductive success, tolerance between adult males, the central position of the infant in the society and its protection by both male and female and finally the role of the infant as social contact, which is very apparent in the so-called triads.
