Das dialogische Selbst: interkulturelle Kommunikation "in" der Person?

Abstract: The dialogical self is seen not only as a promising alternative which exceeds traditional psychological concepts of the self, but also as adequate model for a specific "diasporic self" which may be fruitfully employed in acculturation research. By application of the notions of "dialogicality" and "multivoicedness" by M. Bachtin the idea of the decentralization of the self becomes so dominant that the counteridea of a synthesizing force seems hardly plausible. A short glance to some empirical studies working with the model of the dialogical self, however, reveals that a coherent identity of some kind is attributed to the research partner by the theorist and researcher, even though the theory itself, pointing to decentralization and hybridity of cultural identity, excludes the idea of a unifying force.
