Zusammenfassung: Renhaltung, Natur und ein selbstbestimmtes Leben in der Wildnis war das eine Bild, das im 19. Jahrhundert mit den Sámi assoziiert wurde, die Vorstellung von einem Volk auf einer vermeintlich „niederen“ Kulturstufe das andere. Beide Auffassungen waren nicht zutreffend, sie beruhten u.a. auf mangelndem Wissen. Diese und andere Stereotype belasten die Gemeinschaft der Sámi teilweise bis heute. Die Arbeit versteht sich als ein Beitrag, Assoziationen aufzubrechen. 1870-1930 war neben wissenschaftlichem Interesse an den Sámi auch eine große allgemeine Wissbegierde an Land und Leuten zu verzeichnen. Die Fotografie war dabei ein wichtiges Hilfsmittel bei der Befriedigung. Die Entstehungs- und Rezeptionsbedingungen von 160 zur Sámi-Sammlung des Museums Europäischer Kulturen – Staatliche Museen zu Berlin gehörenden fotografischen Bilddokumenten aus dem genannten Zeitraum werden rekonstruiert. Ziel ist es, die Bedeutung der Fotografie für Wahrnehmung, Vorstellung und Identität der Sámi damals und heute anhand dieser konkreten Einzelbeispiele aufzuzeigen. Die Abbildungen sind in Bezug auf Bildinhalt, Aussage und die Fotografen äußerst heterogen. Die Sámi selbst haben mit dem neuen Medium auch eigene Bedürfnisse befriedigt. Die Hinterfragung der Fotografien soll dazu beitragen, den Blick für eine differenzierte Sicht auf die Kultur der Sámi zu schärfen
Zusammenfassung: The keeping of reindeer, nature and an independent life in the wild was one aspect associated with the Sámi in the 19th century; another was the idea of a people on a supposedly ‘lower’ cultural level. None of these perceptions however did match the reality of Sámi culture. They were based, among other things, on a lack of knowledge. This and other stereotyped thinking weighs heavily upon the Sámi community – sometimes even to this day. This study is meant as a contribution to break with those associations. Scholarly interest in the Sámi aside, there was during the period from 1870 to 1930 a notable, widespread public eagerness to find out about their country and people. Photography had become an important aid to satisfy this interest. From 160 photographs taken from the Sámi collection of the Museum Europäischer Kulturen – Staatliche Museen zu Berlin I shall reconstruct the circumstances of their origins and reception. With the help of these concrete examples I shall demonstrate the significance of photography for the perception, the very idea and identity of the Sámi at that time and now. The portrayals are very heterogenous regarding content, message and photographers. The Sámi too used this new medium extensively to serve their own needs and purposes. This analysis aims to make a material contribution to the perception of the Sámi by encouraging a more subtly differentiated point of view
