Islam, Staat und Demokratie

Die Frage, ob der Islam mit der Vorstellung vom modernen Staat und der Demokratie vereinbar ist oder nicht, ist seit Jahrzehnten diskutiert worden. Viele Islamgegner wie konservative Muslime kommen zu einer negativen Antwort, moderne Theologen im Islam dagegen sehen keinen Widerspruch zwischen dem Islam einerseits und dem modernen Staat und der Demokratie andererseits. Sie behaupten, der Koran sage wenig zur Herrschaftsform und Muslime haben historisch mit unterschiedlichsten Herrschaftsformen gelebt. Was diesbezüglich überrascht, ist die Tatsache, dass diese Diskussion während des "Arabischen Frühlings" 2011 keine Rolle gespielt hat, sondern die Menschen einfach Demokratie forderten und so jegliche autoritäre Herrschaft ablehnten. Dies zeigt eine tiefe Kluft zwischen der theologischen Führung und den konkreten Erwartungen des Volkes. Hierin sieht José Casanova eine Parallele zum Westlichen Christentum, das Ende des 19. und zu Beginn des 20. Jhs. die Demokratie ablehnte und dann Parteien hervorbrachte, die für sie eintraten.
The question whether or not Islam can be reconciled with the idea of the modern state and democracy has been discussed over the last decades. Opponents to Islam as well as conservative Muslims gave a negative response while modern Muslim theologians favoured positive answers. They insisted on the fact that the Koran says little about ruling and that Muslim societies lived with various forms of governance. What is, however, striking is that during the "Arab spring" of 2011 no reference to this theoretical debate was made when people claimed for democracy thus rejecting authoritarian rulers. This shows a significant gap between theological leadership and concrete expectations of the people. This has, according to José Casanova, a parallel in Western Christianity which in the end of the 19th and at the beginning of the 20th centuries was strongly opposed to democracy and then brought forward political parties in its support.
