Small-strip thin gap chambers for the New Small Wheel Upgrade and search for dark matter production in association with a Z boson with the ATLAS detector
Abstract: After the upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) to the High Luminosity LHC, scheduled for completion by 2029, the luminosity is expected to significantly increase to at least 5×10³⁴ cm⁻² s⁻¹. This enhancement will pose significant challenges for the ATLAS detector, particularly in the forward regions where the original design would lead to a substantial increase in the rate of fake muon triggers and a degradation of muon tracking performance. To address these issues, the New Small Wheel (NSW) upgrade was implemented, incorporating Micromegas (MM) and Small-strip Thin Gap Chambers (sTGC). The thesis navigates through the sTGC operational principles, assembly, testing, and integration, and presents recent results achieved during the current data taking period. Additionally, this work delves into the identification of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) as potential dark matter candidates, focusing on events where a Z-boson is produced in association with WIMPs. The search is based on the data from the ATLAS experiment’s previous data taking period, scrutinizing proton-proton collisions at 13 TeV and an integrated luminosity of 139 fb⁻¹. No significant excess of data was observed, and compared to previous analyses, improved exclusion limits were set on the parameters of simplified and 2HDM+a models
