Coupling Gasification with Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier Storage: Aspects of Dynamization of Biomass‐Based Power Production

Abstract: Gasification of biomass can yield synthesis gas for power generation. A problem is the poor adjustability to changes in load. To improve dynamics, integration of a hydrogen storage system based on liquid organic hydrogen carriers has been evaluated. Coupled with a gasification unit, it can remove hydrogen from the synthesis gas. If the power demand is high, dehydrogenation releases hydrogen to increase the energy content of the gas mixture. The proposed concept is discussed regarding three aspects: dynamics, energy demand, and reliability. Especially, if a load change is not a very short peak, the ability of the system to adjust is improved. To achieve this, energy input is needed, which lowers the overall efficiency. Furthermore, attention should be paid to protecting the catalysts from poisoning.
