Development of ultrasonic fatigue system for testing hybrid materials : = Entwicklung eines Ultraschall-Ermüdungssystems zur Prüfung hybrider Werkstoffe

Abstract: One of the first subtasks in materials selection for primary and secondary structures in general aviation involves generating fatigue life data for several composite material systems. Several variables such as fiber-architecture, resin system, laminate-layup configuration, loading conditions, and environment add up to the Design of Experiments (DOE) matrix. This makes the realization of fatigue life data of composite material systems for aircraft, to be expensive as well as time-consuming. To overcome this challenge, fatigue testing at ultrasonic frequency is proposed. Very high Cycle Fatigue (VHCF) systems were built and are being developed to conduct experiments in the frequency range of 20 kHz using ultrasonic resonance systems. This means, a VHCF experiment up to 10^9 cycles, which would take 6.3 years with a servo-hydraulic machine at 5 Hz, can be performed within 12 days with an ultrasonic fatigue system. In this article, the working principle of one of the VHCF systems, the three-point bending loading system is explained. Further information on the CFRP material which will be used for first-stage experiments is also outlined
