Fluctuation-induced interaction of neutrons with metal or dielectric surfaces

Zusammenfassung: In this thesis, the dispersion potential of a neutron in front of a metal or dielectric plate is derived. This set-up was chosen to obtain a repulsive potential by using one completely magnetic and one completely electric object. By applying an external magnetic field the neutron can be in its ground state or in its excited state. The position-dependent potential for both cases is calculated. We use macroscopic quantum electrodynamics and perturbation theory to obtain the potential for a general geometry. By inserting our specific scenario, we obtain the potential for the neutron in front of a plate with arbitrary dielectric properties. To simplify our result, we insert four different models for the plate, first the perfect conductor, then two models for metals and one for a dielectric material. We find that the neutron in its ground state is subject to a repulsive potential for every model. In the excited state we find partly repulsive and partly attractive potentials. For two of the models we find a nonzero dispersion force if the external magnetic field vanishes
