Zuerst war die Burg, gegründet im Jahre 1197 durch Bischof Heinrich III, von Würzburg als Grenzfestung gegen das Erzbistum Mainz, dessen stark befestigte Stadt und Burg Miltenberg westlich am Mainufer lag. Das Lehen wurde den Grafen von Wertheim übertragen. Eine planmäßige Stadtgründung unterhalb der Burg am Flussufer erfolgte im Jahre 1287. Stadt und Burg waren durch gemeinsame Mauern verbunden. Im Jahr 1295 wird die Siedlung als “Oppidum“ bezeichnet (befestigt mit Wall und Palisaden). Mit der Erteilung offizieller Stadtrechte im Jahre 1333 sollte der wirtschaftliche Aufschwung als Handels- und Zollposten beginnen, doch der erwarte begeisterte Zuzug von Leuten aus den umliegenden Orten war eher schwach, trotz angebotener Vergünstigungen (etwa 2 Jahre Steuerfreiheit). Schließlich ordnete man die Zwangsumsiedlung an, wobei das Dorf Lutingescheidt schließlich wüst fiel. Im Jahre 1803 kam der Besitz direkt an die Grafen von Löwenstein-Wertheim-Freudenberg, im Jahre 1806 an die Republik Baden und in Folge schließlich an Baden-Württemberg. Der Anblick ist beherrscht von der auf einer steilen Felsnase über der Stadt liegenden Burg, die in den Jahren 1497-1503 nochmals mit Feuerwaffen und Erweiterungen modernisiert wurde. Lange Schenkelmauern ziehen zur Stadt hinab. Die Burg wurde ab dem 17 Jh. aufgegeben. Die Stadttore wurden im 19. Jahrhundert niedergelegt, wie auch der Wehrgang und Teile der Stadtmauer. Dennoch hat die Stadtmauer seit Ende des 10. Jahrhunderts wieder eine „Wehrfunktion“: In Kombination mit modernen Fluttoren, die in die Lücken eingesetzt werden können, bewährte sich das neue Hochwasser-Schutzsystem bereits mehrere Male. Die langgestreckte Altstadt hat noch einige Fachwerkhäuser, die im Kern in das 16/17. Jahrhundert zurückreichen. Kern der Altstadt ist das Rathaus von 1499, mehrfach verändert. Interessant sind das Bergviertel mit seinen engen und steilen Wegen, wie auch das Fischerviertel in der Unterstadt. First, there was the castle founded in 1197 by Bishop Henry III. of Würzburg, was a warhead to save the borderline against the interests of the Archbishopric of Mainz at the Main river; the strong walled town of Miltenberg was next to West! The fief of the castle and the protection of the borderline and the river tax was given to the Counts of Wertheim. In 1287, a town was planned and founded at the river shore underneath the castle, and walls run the steep hillside to the castle, integrating the castle into the town defense. In 1295, the town was called “oppidum”, which means that wall and palisade exists. In 1333 official town rights were given with special advantages for the new citizens, for example two years of no tax for the inhabitants. But – the expected “cheering hooray” didn´t come either by the people of the surrounding villages, and finally the inhabitants were ordered and forced to move into the town. The village of Lutingescheidt, for example, was abandoned afterwards. In 1803, the possession came to the Counts of Löwenstein-Wertheim-Freudenberg; in 1806 to the Republic of Baden and finally to Baden-Württemberg afterwards. The prospect is dominated by the castle, which looks impressive on the steep hill spin above, even as a ruin. Latest upgrade was done between 1497-1507, when the castle was upgraded for fire arms, and it served many generations on. Still the mighty walls run down to the town. From the beginning 17th century onward, the castle was abandoned. Parts of the town wall are although still present (while the gate houses are gone), and in the late 20th century, they again serve as “protection” within a new system: In case of flood of the Main river (which happens more often now), big iron parts were fit water tight between the existing parts of the town wall (without battlement) at the river shore. The town itself is small and long stretched, but has fine half-timbered houses; the town hall is partly renewed and the church is Baroque. The small and narrow old part of the town still has houses originally founded in the 15/16th century. The proud town hall from 1499 is the “center” of the town. Of interest is the “hillside quarter” with steep and narrow streets, although as the “river quarter” with the fishermen’s houses.
