Functions of Bill and Tongue in Woodpeckers. Green and Great Spotted Woddpeckers find food on the ground and in rotten wood: hereby using the tongue they also feed hidden larvae in their haunts. The Great Spotted Woodpecker carries nuts to a special place ("anivil") and opens them there. Great Spotted Woodpeckers and Black Woodpeckers start ti carve out cavities for their nests. All three species throw loosened woodchips out of the opening. Young woodpeckers rap inside the breeding hole. Great Spotted Woodpecker and Black Woodpecker drum with rapid blows with the bill on dead branches. All three species feed the young in the nest.
