Synthesis, Modification and Characterization of Ceria based Ceramics for Solar Thermochemical Fuel Production

Zusammenfassung: In the context of solar thermochemical fuel production a variety of non-volatile metal oxides have been competing as redox material in the last decades. It’s high temperature stability and high theoretical solar-to-fuel conversion efficiency made cerium dioxide one of the most promising candidates. Solar reactor pilot plants utilize dual-scale porous ceria ceramics which allow for volumetric light absorption (since it is a solar driven process) by pores in the mm-range, and high reaction rates by interconnected µm-sized pores which are accessible for reactive gas mixtures. In this thesis solid solutions of ceria doped with isovalent cations were produced by a solid state reaction and by Pechini synthesis and the sintering- and microstructural and phase development as well as the redox-performance and up-scalability were investigated. This work shines a light on material properties that have to be regarded coherently to contribute to the understanding of ceria based ceramics applicable in solar thermochemical redox cycles
