Sepia officinalis has two clearly distinguishable methods of hunting which are used on two types of prey: that capable of defence, such as armoured crabs are gripped with the eight short tentacles in a spring movement, and prey capable of rapid escape, such as shrimps and fish, are after short aims is taken grasped by the rapid long catching tentacles (4th pair).
