The former village was mentioned first in the 8th century. When in possession of the Counts of Lauffen, the village got coin- and market rights (market-village). After being handed over to the Counts of Eberstein, the village got town rights and was strongly walled. The 14th century then saw the Palatinate as master of this town, and the Prince Elector put the administration center of the surrounding district in here. Trading made the town growing and rich, and in the 15th century, the fortifications were strengthened due to the new gun-technology. Just in time, because the Palatinate-Bavarian war of succession in 1504 saw this town successful defended against Württembergian troops. Less luck the town had in the Thirty-Years war (1618-1648), das the year 1689 finally put devastations on it by French Marauder forces during the Palatinate war of succession. The city itself show half-timbered and stone houses mostly from the 18th century and later, built on old remnants. This town is although the birth place of Phlipp Melanchton (1497-1560), a companion of Martin Luther. Finally, the bell-tower of the town church is the old keep of the castle of the Counts of Eberstein, re-used from the 14th century onward. The famous town fortification is partly restaurated and show remnants of the town wall in the South, North and West. Two towers do show the brilliance of defense technology: Out of the 14th century there is the “Simmel-tower” in the Southeast (a rounded tower with loopholes for crossbows) and in case of the 15th century there is the “Pfeifer-tower” in the North: A 6 stories tall gun tower equipped with heavy wall-guns using bullets of one pound with an effective range of 150-400 meters. In here, the loopholes are stair-shaped to distort incoming missiles.
