Synthesis of 2D Magnesium Oxide Nanosheets: A Potential Material for Phosphate Removal

Abstract: Phosphate ions are responsible for eutrophication in drinking and wastewater, so it is necessary to limit the phosphate concentration in water bodies to limit the eutrophication problem. Porous magnesium oxide (MgO) nanosheets are synthesized at room temperature by simple precipitation and calcination. The synthesized material is characterized by various techniques. The sheet‐like MgO and commercial MgO are evaluated by the batch adsorption test. The synthesized material has an efficient adsorption efficiency of 95% at pH 5 as compared with commercial MgO, having a removal efficiency of 24% under the same investigated conditions. The synthesized MgO can be an efficient adsorbent material to overcome the eutrophication problem of the waste/domestic water.
