Ehrenamt in den Öffentlichen Bibliotheken Österreichs

Das öffentliche Bibliothekswesen in Österreich wird mehrheitlich von ehrenamtlichen BibliothekarInnen getragen. So sind über 80 % der MitarbeiterInnen in den Öffentlichen Bibliotheken in Österreich ehrenamtlich tätig. Dabei zeigen sich große – sich nur geringfügig ändernde – Unterschiede in den einzelnen Bundesländern. Dieser Beitrag erläutert die Struktur der österreichischen Bibliothekslandschaft, zeigt die Bestrebungen zur Professionalisierung durch Aus- und Fortbildungen des Büchereiverbandes Österreichs und präsentiert an einem Best-Practice-Beispiel das Engagement ehrenamtlicher BibliothekarInnen.
Abstract: The majority of public libraries in Austria are run by volunteer librarians. More than 80 percent of the staff in public libraries in Austria are volunteers. There are large – only slightly changing – differences in the individual federal provinces. This article explains the structure of the library landscape in Austria and shows the efforts towards professionalisation through training and further education of the Austrian Library Association and presents the commitment of volunteer librarians with a best practice example.
