Father-Daughter Incest

Judith Herman, a psychatrist, convincingly refuses the emergent view that incest is fundamentally harmless and its prohibition a form of puritanism. Through an intensive clinical study of forty incest victims and numerous interviews with professionals in mental health, child protection, and law enforcement, the author develops a composite picture of the incestuous family. The locus of the problem is the patriarchal father, dominating the home with absolute authority and free to view his children as his personal possessions. This pioneering book combines a clinical approach with a feminist analysis of the issue.
