Rapid Aging of Binder‐Free Zeolite NaY Beads in Thermal Energy Storage Applications

Abstract: Zeolites can be used to store thermal energy, but they may age and lose a fraction of their storage capacity during prolonged use. The purpose of this study is to determine which parameters are responsible for the aging of the zeolite NaY by exposing it to extreme hydrothermal conditions. In a laboratory unit, a fixed bed of binder‐free zeolite NaY beads was treated hydrothermally, and the beads were analyzed for signs of aging. Also, a fixed bed of binder‐free zeolite 13X beads was tested for comparison. The results indicate that the two zeolite types age differently, depending on temperature and time of exposure.
