Beschneidungs- und Initiationsriten bei den Xhosa, Südafrika

Die Jünglinge werden vor der Initiandenhütte beschnitten und verbringen dort anschließend drei Monate in Seklusion. Während dieser Zeit erhalten sie Unterricht über ihre zukünftigen Pflichten und Rechte. Die Initiationsperiode wird mit gemeinsamer Waschung am Fluß, Überreichen neuer Decken und Stücke sowie Tanz abgeschlossen. Die Rückkehr der Jungmänner in die Familie wird festlich begangen (Tieropfer).
The youth are circumcised in front of the initiation hut, in which they are then secluded for three months. During this time they receive instruction in their duties and rights. At the end of the period of seclusion the initiates wash themselves collectively in the river, they are given new blankets and sticks and a dance is held. The return home of the young men is celebrated by feasting (animal sacrifices).
