Fechtbuch : Libr. pict. A 83
This fencing-book from the beginning of the 16th century is almost entirely a picture-book that contains hardly any text at all. Instead it comprises 258 drawings on 130 pages. Most of these drawings present a pair of fighters using different cut and thrust weapons common to the time: long- and short-sword and dagger. With regards to its content the anonymous Berlin codex owes much to the written and painted work of Hans Talhofer, a fencing instructor and famous sword fighter for three decades until 1482. By displaying fighters in an arena (folio 6v) the book also refers to fencing as a form of ordeal by battle, the armed duel of two combatants as a last chance to end a legal dispute. Stylistically the pictures closely resemble those of a fencing-book from the school of Albrecht Dürer from 1512.
