Belief in ghosts and cult dances still play a part today in many ritual acts of the Mahayana-Buddhism of Vietnam. The ceremonies portrayed in this film in a Pagoda near Huê are initiated by a Buddhistic priest. The further development of the dance, however, is dominated by "possessed women" dancing before the altar. They claim to have been visited by ghosts and ordered to dance for them. During the ecstatic dances the women fall into trance-like state of mind and swing in their hands various magical attributes such as knives, clubs, sticks and so on which give an indication of the ghosts which they incarnate. In many rituals of these types the women also make predictions and distribute curative amulettes to the believers.
