Ewe (Westafrika, Südost-Ghana) - Säuglingspflege

Vor ihrem Haus in Kpandu (Volta-Region) unterzieht eine junge Frau ihren vier Monate alten Säugling der zweimal täglich durchgeführten Körperpflege. Sie wäscht Gesicht, Haare und Körper, reinigt sorgfältig Ohren, Nase, Augenwinkel, Genitalien und Hautfalten. Zur Reinigung benutzt sie Seife. Nach dem Abtrocknen wird der Säugling mit einheimischem Puder betupft, den die Mutter von einem Tonstein abreibt. Nach Kämmen und Ankleiden wird das Kind in einem Tragetuch auf den Rücken der Mutter gebunden.
The film shows a mother in front of her house in Kpandu while bathing her four-month-old infant daughter. Husbands daughter of a former wife, 19 years old, has placed all necessary utensils in the middle of the compound. Among the Ewe a baby is by routine bathed twice daily. The mother is sitting on a low chair and has stretched out her legs so that the baby can rest on them while washed. She uses soap to wash first head and then body, and special care is taken to clean ears, nose, eyes, genitals, and skin-folds. After drying with a towel, the mother puts local powder on the skin which is taken from a piece of clay. Combed, and dressed in panties and a lofty shirt, the baby is bound on mother's back; a piece of cotton cloth serves for carrying. The older daughter clears the compound and will then return to her daily work.
