Der Schutzpatron von Florenz war Johannes der Täufer, was die zahlreichen Darstellungen des Heiligen erklärt, die während der Renaissance in der Stadt entstanden sind. Hier zog es der anonyme Bildhauer vor, den Heiligen in seiner Jugend darzustellen, von den Entbehrungen seines Lebens in der Wildnis noch nicht gekennzeichnet.
