Durch weitestgehende Umbildung der Halswirbel ist der Purpurreiher an das Stoßjagen angepaßt. Nach optischer Fixierung der im Wasser schwimmenden Beute wird der Hals S-förmig gekrümmt. Durch Vorschnellen des Kopfes und Strecken des Halses werden Beutefische aufgespießt.
The film shows a nearly grown-up purple heron capturing prey. The prey is searched for with the neck being stretched out straight. While the eyes fix the prey the head is kept immobile. Before the stroke the neck is curved by the body being bent forward. The stroke itself is carried out by sudden straightening of the neck. The fishes captured are speared with the bill.
