The hand coloured woodcut with texts by the noted protestant theologian Erasmus Alber was printed in Magdeburg around 1550. The resurrected Christ defeats the enemies of protestantism, which are depicted in the shape of a three-headed apocalyptic animal: Pope, Turk and Interim. Interim is the political compromise between Catholics and Protestants, devised by Philipp Melanchton and agreed to by Emperor Carl V. In the background are Golgotha and the crucifixion (right) and the heavenly city of Jerusalem (left). At the top left the Godfather instates Christ as his representative on earth. In the following text, in rhyming couplets, Christ in turn instates Martin Luther as his representative and leader of the true Christian faith.
