Abstract: In the 1940s, the Delaware River at Philadelphia was so dirty that pilots could smell it from the air. The water was so harsh it corroded metal and discolored paint. Fish killed by pollution washed up on the Delaware’s banks. The lack of oxygen in parts of the river blocked the critical migration of others.
