Waika - Herstellung eines Bogens (Südamerika, Venezuela)

Aus dem Stamm der Chontapalme (Guilielma gasipaes) wird ein Dreikantstück herausgeschlagen, mit Machete und Messer behauen, abgehobelt und zu plankonvexem Querschnitt abgerundet. Die Feinbearbeitung erfolgt mit Wildschweinunterkiefer, rauhen Blättern, bespuckten Rindenbastfetzen; die Einfärbung mit Urucú (Bixa orellana). Aus zu Schnüren gerollten und gedrillten Rindenbaststreifen wird die Sehne hergestellt und auf den Bogen gespannt.
Wood for the bow is cut from the trunk of a palm tree. After further hewing and polishing, the bow is rubbed with the juice of crushed leaves and is dyed red. The strings are made from bark bast and are finally stretched onto the bow.
