Mycoplasma mobile was isolated in 1982 from the gills of a tench (Tinca tinca L.). This mycoplasma species impresses by its peculiar cell shape, its strong adherence and its persistent gliding motility. Cells are gliding on glass as well as on the surface of erythrocytes, predominantly as single cells, but frequently also in groups, i. e. as pairs or multicellular, often chain-like aggregates. During gliding, they are able to pull attached erythrocytes. Multiplication occurs by equal or unequal binary division. Microcolonies are formed, which are often surrounded by a swarm-like area of constantly emigrating and immigrating cells. In flowing medium, Mycoplasma mobile shows positive rheotactic behaviour, i. e. the cells move "upstream". Fried-egg colonies, which are typical for mycoplasmas, develop on solid media.
