Typisch für Guercinos frühe, vorrömische Phase sind die im Kontrast zu den Pastositäten in Gewand, Pelz und Schmuck sehr zart abgestuften, wie feucht schimmernden Hautpartien und der fahle Grundton der das wenige, vom Licht erfasste Rot und Blau umso wärmer aufstrahlen lässt. Thema ist die häufig wiedergegebene mystische Vermählung der Hl. Katharina mit dem Jesuskind. Hier hält es den Ring noch vor seine Brust, während Maria den Ringfinger der Heiligen emporhebt. Über den so entstehenden Raum hinweg schaffen Blicke und raffinierte Lichtführung kraftvolle Diagonalen – Effekte, die Guercino gegenüber der Vorzeichnung (Oxford) noch deutlicher herausgearbeitet hat.| Prestel-Museumsführer - Gemäldegalerie Berlin, 2017______________________________________Typical of Guercino’s early, pre-Roman phase are the very delicate gradations of the main sections, shimmering as if they were wet in contrast with the heavily applied paint in the garments, fur and jewellery, and the pallid ground tone, which makes the little red and blue that is caught by the light glow all the more warmly. The subject is the frequently reproduced mystical marriage of St. Catherine with the infant Jesus. Here he is still clasping the ring to his chest, while Mary lifts up the saint’s ring finger.
