Penicillinwirkung auf Proteus. Veränderungen ihrer Morphologie (Verlängerung, Verdickung, Auswüchse) und ihres Bewegungsverhaltens.
All species of Proteus show numerous morphological changes under low concentrations of penicillin, due to inhibition of cell wall synthesis, namely unusually long or thick threads, sometimes with protuberances, large round mobile or immobile bodies, and branching threads. The long threads sometimes form rotating spirals, the round or branching structures also sometimes show rotatory movement. The flagellae of the bacteria become well visible in the phase contrast microscope owing to their greater thickness. The synchronisation of their movements is clearly visible. The flagellae are increasingly cast off. Their aggregation to flagella plaits is easily seen. The results of quantitative evaluation are described in detail in the accompanying text.
