Abstract: Abstract Without any doubt, Paris – as a major European centre with its renowned scientific institutions, its publishing houses and scientific circles, but also its salons – was the ideal place for Alexander von Humboldt to advance his scientific work and to observe the accelerating circulation of knowledge that inspired his writing. And yet, the development of his life’s work was less linked to a specific, concrete place than to a vectoricity. This is evident in all of Humboldt’s writings in the overlays of the most diverse places and landscapes. Right across Humboldt’s journeys, that were and still are astonishing both in their dimensions and in their results, there is an oscillating movement that connected Berlin, Potsdam and Paris with the ‘New World’ and the debates about the latter over a period of almost six decades.
