Constructing the Enemy in the Sino-Soviet Borderlands, ca. 1969–1982 This paper examines the impact of the hostilities between the Soviet Union and China during the period of the bitterest disagreement between the two great socialist powers on the local and regional level at the border between the two states. The article focuses on the region of Chita (Eastern Transbaikalian region) and Hulunbuir (Inner Mongolia). An analysis of the Soviet propaganda reveals that the conflict produced only very few innovations in technology and content. Instead, propaganda material had rather been dug out of the «relic box». Enemy concepts dating back to a former phase of the conflict were rekindled and remained stereotypical and abstract. Zusammenfassung: Der unergründliche Gegner. Die Konstruktion des Feindes im chinesisch-sowjetischen Grenzland (ca. 1969–1982) Der Beitrag untersucht, wie sich die Feindschaft zwischen der Sowjetunion und China in der Phase des größten Zerwürfnisses der beiden sozialistischen Großmächte auf der regionalen und lokalen Ebene an der Grenze zwischen den beiden Staaten auswirkte. Im Fokus steht dabei die Region der Gebiete Tschita (östliches Transbaikalien) und Hulunbei’er (Innere Mongolei). Eine Analyse der sowjetischen Propaganda ergibt, dass der Konflikt kaum technologische und inhaltliche Innovationen hervorbrachte, sondern die Propagandaelemente aus der «Mottenkiste» stammten. Feindbilder blieben stereotyp und abstrakt und wurden aus einer früheren Konfliktphase wieder aufgewärmt. Für die Bevölkerung vor Ort bedeutete die Abschottung, dass sie die Menschen auf der anderen Seite der Grenze nur noch wie durch eine «Milchglasscheibe» sehen konnten
