El vínculo entre la pobreza y la desigualdad con la participación electoral ciudadana: las elecciones presidenciales de 2006 y 2014 en Costa Rica

La hipótesis de que la pobreza y la desigualdad impactan negativamente sobre la democracia son expuestas por diversas tradiciones de investigación; sin embargo, no existe mucha evidencia empírica que la respalde en Costa Rica. Dado que la emisión del voto en procesos electorales es un elemento legitimador de las democracias, se analizó la relación de la pobreza y la desigualdad con la participación electoral, ello mediante una metodología que consiste en un modelo de regresión mixto longitudinal de tres niveles, el cual confirmó la relación entre estos elementos al utilizar los porcentajes de participación electoral en las contiendas presidenciales a nivel distrital de los años 2006 y 2014 como la variable respuesta.
Various research traditions have posited the hypothesis that poverty and inequality have a negative impact on democracy. However, there is not much empirical evidence to back it up for Costa Rica. Given that voting in electoral processes is a legitimating element of democratic systems, to test this hypothesis this paper analyzes the relationship between poverty and citizen participation in elections, using a novel methodology for testing this link. The paper employs the percentages of citizen participation in Costa Rica's 2006 and 2014 presidential elections as the dependent variable in a mixed three-level longitudinal regression model, which allows for analysis of the evolution of electoral preferences over time and the way this relates with poverty variables with different levels of spatial aggregation.
