The cells of the colony-forming Stephanopyxis turris multiply vegetatively by bi-division. The numerous lobed plastides double during the interphase by simple intersection. Cell division is initiated by marked longitudinal growth with migration of the nucleus to the equator of the cell. In the anaphase of the division of the nucleus the central spindle that is typical for diatoms appears. The fission of the protoplast starts near the nucleus.
