Died November 13, 1868 |; When one thinks of melody, pure and unadulter- | ated, one's mind turns to the older Italian Opera, |; which demanded not only melody, but vocalists of the | highest attainments to sing it. This school of opera | culminated in Rossini, born at Pesaro, Italy. He was | the most gifted of those wandering Italian musicians | who exercised powerful influences both in France and | Germany. Rossini, as rich in melody as Mozart, | although possibly less refined, was more a natural | musician than a worker; nevertheless, he studied with | the famous Padre Mattei, who also trained the great | Donizetti and so many others. Beethoven called | Rossini "a great scene painter." His earliest success | was Tancredi (1813); we hear only its overture nowa- | days. Semiramide demands a whole cast of coloratura | singers; William Tell, likewise; but The Barber of | Seville (light opera) still "holds the boards"; this latter | contains the finest buffo aria ever written for a bass. |; Rossini accumulated a fortune from his productions | and retired to Paris to enjoy it. No one knows why, | and nearly forty years, he ceased composing. But later | in life, he produced the Stabat Mater (mediaeval "Hymn | to the Virgin").
