Methylmethacrylic Ball Interpositional Arthroplasty in Ankylosis of Temporomandibular Joint-A Case Report

A case of unilateral temporo mandibular joint ankylosis following middle ear infection is presented. The method employed is an attempt to improve the results of arthroplasty by using acrylic as a spacer between the bone fragments. An emphasis has been laid on the specific postoperative management of allowing the patient to move jaws after forty Eight hours and to use the rubber wedge in between the molar teeth to avoid open bite. We agree with Kruger (1968) that early vigorous and sustained postoperative jaw dilation is essential otherwise arthroplasty may fail.
