Both sexes of the substrate brooding Cichlid Tilapia tholloni take care of their eggs - which are sticking to the substrate - by fanning them and "picking" at them. Newly hatched larvae are sticking to the substrate by means of cement-glands. Later on the parents may transport the young to another part of the pit or to another pit. When the swim-bladder is beginning to get filled the hopping movements of the young gradually change to normal swimming. At this time the parents will be found amidst the cloud of young fish with the young ones keeping at a certain distance from the parents.
