Die räumliche Struktur von Lichtblitzen beim Polychaeten Eusyllis blomstrandi (Annelida)

Die Leuchtfähigkeit ist unter Meerestieren weit verbreitet. Bei dem im Sublitoral der Nordsee vorkommenden Vielborster Eusyllis blomstrandi erzeugt jedes Rumpfsegment Licht mit einem paarigen Leuchtzellhaufen (Photozyten). Das Licht wird in seriellen, periodischen (5 - 7 Hz) Blitzen ausgestrahlt. Zeitlupenaufnahmen dokumentieren, dass die Lichtreize schnell (= 1 ms) von Segment zu Segment geleitet werden können. Die Luminiszenz kann zwischen den aneinanderliegenden Segmenten zeitlich, räumlich und nach ihrer Intensität koodiniert werden.
Luminescent activity is widespread among marine animals. In the polychaete Eusyllis blomstrandi from the sublittoral of the North Sea each of the trunk segments can emit light by a paired cluster of photocytes. Light is emitted in serial, periodic (5 - 7 Hz) flashes. Slow motion video reveals that excitation of the luminescent system can quickly (= 1 ms) pass from segment to segment such that luminescence is coordinated among adjoining segments with respect to time, space and magnitude.
