Kirchhof im Norden nach Nordosten mit Gaden (Fachwerk auf steinernem Stock - im Kern 15 Jh) sowie Kirchhofmauer (Wehrgang im 19 Jh abgetragen)

Architektur

Gründung zu Romanischer Zeit. Die Gaden-Kirchenburg von Sulzthal ist in extremer Lage in einem Berghang am Ortsrand angelegt und zeigt, wie dir Baumeister auch mit solchen Situationen fertig wurde. Wohl gotisch überarbeitet und verstärkt, wurde schließlich im Jahr 1804 nach Aufgabe des Kirchhofes das Langhaus neu erbaut und im Süden und Westen die Kirchhofmauer mit Wehrgang sowie der innen abgebauten Gaden abgetragen. Zur steil ansteigenden Bergseite im Westen und Osten, sowie entlang der Bergseite im Norden selbst ist die Kirchhofmauer, wenn auch ohne Wehrgang erhalten, im Osten finden sich noch Gaden, wenn auch teils stark verändert. Founded in Romanesque time, the extreme siting of this „Gaden Church-Castle“ within a steep hillside at the edge of the village shows very fine, how the architects have been able to handle this special challenge of protection, storage capacity and defense.. For sure the church was overworked and reinforced in Gothic times, and finally the nave was totally rebuild in 1804. By that, after the cemetery had lost its primary function, the curtain with battlement was removes in the South and Southwest. As a compensation and fine demonstration of how it looked once (and today, respectively) you find the curtain running up the steep hillside in the West and East, and finally along the whole North part, in all cases without battlement (removed in the 19th century although). In the East, there are Gaden remaining, mostly the stone ground levels with cellars, while the upper levels made of half-timbered or stone are in different stage of origin, while still in use today.
